Here I wait
Our country is that of anguish: a dystopian utopia whose future appears uncertain. An illusory freedom is lived. It was a tree felled in a premeditated manner. Upon falling it lost seven million leaves; afterward they cut it into small pieces.A horde of predators looted a country that offered opportunities for everyone and had resources in abundance. That is no longer the case. For nearly a quarter of a century the destruction of everything was systematized.
The greatest achievement of the extinguished democracy—education—was attacked without mercy and was left almost dismantled, so that the new generations would lack the resources and the intellectual preparation necessary to react to the destruction of their own future. The profusion of dirty money served as fertilizer for a corruption never seen before. It spread like a virus.
That money bought politicians, votes, and the silence of many. What could not be corrupted was run over by a pseudo-system of justice that accused and methodically condemned people and institutions with laws adapted and manipulated to the convenience of the governing power.
Thus they ruined reputations, controlled or closed media outlets, destroyed farms that produced food and industries destined to grow.Lies and deceit became the main institution of the country.I feel that I have spent my whole life sobbing thick tears. Yes, I feel sadness, I feel anguish, I feel that there is no longer hope.
A procession of people left the country and many continue leaving, leaving everything behind. I see mothers turned into marble who drag their children only in their memories.Years of torments and hardships squeezed millions of souls and left them with a profound emptiness.
All this was happening while the destroyers, with their crowned smiles, contemplated their masterpiece: a suspended country, a rarefied air, faded doors, dead-end streets, and an impoverished people. Yes, they smiled and celebrated, knowing that everything had been prostituted and razed.
Our freedom was reduced to deceiving ourselves and pretending that everything was fine… and, unfortunately, we ended up believing that the lies were true and the truths, false. How much longer will we have to meekly accept this imposed evil and endure so many injustices?I hope for an answer from heaven, because here I cannot find it…
Author’s note: Between 2015 and 2022 around seven million people emigrated (about 25% of the population). Since then the diaspora has continued to grow: by the end of 2025 and in 2026 estimates place between 7.9 and more than 8 million Venezuelans abroad (some sources raise the figure above 9 million), which represents approximately between 25% and 28% of the population. A country that was not involved in a war.
